WHO IS LEA?

Lea Webb was the first African American and youngest person ever elected to the Binghamton City Council, and she is an award-winning activist who has been recognized as one of tomorrow's leaders by Oprah magazine and the White House Project. 

ISSUES

A fight for better (affordable) housing for rural and urban communities alike
Ensuring everyone can live in a healthy and resilient community
Ensuring equitable healthcare access and keeping our citizens out of medical debt

Proven Results

Climate

✓ Led the fight to ban fracking in the City of Binghamton

✓ Assisted in establishing a city-wide climate action plan

✓ Changed laws to promote green space development and the establishment of community gardens and urban farms

✓ Supported programs to remove lead from Binghamton homes. 

 

Fair Housing

✓ Key Supporter for the creation of a city based human rights commission

✓ Led the fight to create quality affordable housing and championed rehabilitation programs such as Restore NY

✓ Worked with non-profit housing developers to build new units (40+ Homes in the Northside District alone)

✓ Protected tenants by standing up to absentee landlord and strengthening laws to establishing registration and local property management

✓ Worked with nonprofits to establish training, and supported the creation of opportunities for pathways to homeownership

Healthcare

✓ Fought and won support for the Affordable Care Act as a healthcare organizer at Citizen Action

✓ Supported and organized for the passage of the NY Health Act

Jobs & Small Businesses

✓ Supported small businesses as a former member of the Binghamton Local Development Corporation, which provides grants and loans to startup and existing businesses

✓ Helped to increase investment in Binghamton by attracting major residential development projects through the Commission on Downtown Binghamton Development

✓ Worked with the Broome Tioga NAACP to establish an employment preparation program for our youth so that they are ready to seek jobs and careers for their economic advancement

Unions & Service Workers

✓ Led the fight to pass equal pay legislation in 
Binghamton

✓ Voted for project labor agreements on city projects

✓ Supported union strikes and walked the Picket lines with CWA for health care benefits

✓ Worked with transit workers to stop cuts to vital bus routes ✓ Worked with unions, seniors, community advocates and county legislators to successfully prevent the privatization of county nursing homes

✓ Proud UUP/NYSUT union member
