TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y.— New York’s Working Families Party has endorsed two Democratic candidates for statewide offices.
New York State Assemblywoman Anna Kelles, who is running for re-election to represent the 125th Assembly District, and Lea Webb, a former Binghamton City Council member who is running for the Democratic nomination for the New York State Senate 53rd District, both received endorsements. The Working Families Party is the most prominent progressive party in the state, usually leaning significantly to the left of the establishment Democratic party.
Kelles is currently unopposed for re-election. Webb is facing two opponents, Leslie Danks Burke and Dr. Ammitai Worob.
“The Working Families Party is proud to endorse Lea Webb for New York State Senate in the 53rd District,” said Sochie Nnaemeka, the state’s Working Families Party Director. “Lea has a long track record of standing up for working families in the Southern Tier and we know she will be a powerful advocate for affordable housing, quality health care, food security, and climate justice.”
Webb thanked Nnaemeka and the party overall for their confidence and highlighted the party’s alignment with her campaign regarding “progressive, grassroots organizing.”
Nnaemeka offered a similar statement conveying the party’s endorsement of Kelles, calling her a “proven progressive champion,” touting her work on climate issues, affordable housing and pushing expanded health care access.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Working Families Party for my re-election to the NYS Assembly,” Kelles said. “We are fighting for equity, climate justice, universal healthcare and childcare, and affordable housing for all. There is so much work to do and I am proud to be part of this coalition of WFP champions.”
